There is a general rule of thumb that a film is considered hit if it do business above the budget. A film is considered flop if it fails to gross revenue equal to its budget. There were days in bollywood when even Rs. 10 crore business for a film was considered to be blockbuster performance. Sholay, for example is one of the greatest bollywood film. But do you know that it merely made Rs. 15 crore at box office. The total budget of Sholay was Rs. 3 crore and it grossed 5 times its total budget. So it turned out to be one of the most profitable films of that era. But as time changed we got to see more and more big budget movies that made huge revenue at box office.
