Spanish cinema has seen the worst days back during the second world war and has evolved from that to become one of the most popular film industry in the world. When the silent era entered Europe then Spain was one of the most popular film industry that was making classic and popular silent movies at the time. Spanish movies together with French films, german films and italian films represented Europe in the world cinema during that period.
Like other European countries Spain to suffered a lot during World War I. The film industry saw the worst days in the early 1930s when only a hand ful of films were released in a time span of 3 years. World War II only made the situation worse and the adverse effect of war on Spanish cinema was that only few dozen movies from the silent cinema were saved from destruction. Many popular silent films of Spanish cinema were destroyed during the war.
Cinema was not a major priority for War affected Spain in the 1950s. However as life came back to normal, Spanish cinema too opened its wings. It was not easy for Spanish directors and producers to fund the movies so local film production companies of Spain joined film studios of adjoining countries (Italy, Germany and France) to produce movies in the 1960s and 1970s. After the end of dictatorship, Spanish cinema became more open in terms of freedom of expression and art. Directors became more independent and were more open to experiment in film making. This led to first academy award for the country in 1982. By 1990s Spanish movies and spanish actors became popular world wide. Some of the most popular actors and directors from Spanish cinema are – Guillermo del Toro, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. Spain is mainly known for its fantasy movies. However many Spanish movies of Horror, Comedy and Romance genre has also attracted critics and fans world wide.
