If you make a list of most awaited sequels in the history of cinema then you would most probably find the name of Independence Day up there. Released in 1996, the film has achieved a cult fan following and currently is the 38th highest grossing film of all time (as of 2013). Roland Emmerich, who directed the original, has been talking about the sequel since 2010, but there was no confirmation. But this year, he officially announced for the sequel of Independence Day. As soon as the news broke out among fans, a common question arised that Who will return in the sequel? Roland Emmerich confirmed in July 2013 that he has signed up Jeff Golblum and Bill Pullman for the sequel and is yet to talk to fan favorite – Will Smith.
When fan asked about it to him, then Roland doubted about Will smith’s return. He even stated that Will Smith might not return for the sequel. He gave several reasons for this. Number One, Because Will smith is a Big A-List superstar now and it might be too costly to sign him for a sequel. Secondly, Roland is known for making films with ensemble cast (where everyone shares equal role). Will smith is such a big name now that he might overshadow the other cast in the film. Lastly, Will smith himself might not be interested in a sequel.
However, two months later in September 2013, Roland has confirmed that he is interested in Will Smith’s return and is currently in talks with the actor for a possible return. Roland has stated that he intend to make an Independence Day series with as much as three sequels. He might not repeat the same cast in all the sequels hinting that he might use Will smith’s character only in the second installment of Independence day.
Will smith is currently busy in shaping the career of his sons. His recent film After earth (directed by M. Night Shyamlan) was a disaster at box office. It also stared his son Jaden smith. As of now he is focusing on Winter’s Tale (his upcoming film). He is also attached to other sequels as – I am Legend 2 and Bad Boys 3. It would be interesting to see if says yes to another sequel. Definitely it would increase the buzz around the film.
Roland is planning to release the first sequel of Independence day in 2016 because 2015 is already crowded by films like – Star Wars Episode VII, The Avengers 2, Man of Steel 2: Batman vs Superman, Terminator 5, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and a possible Avatar sequel.
