First Look: Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet

Ranbir Kapoor’s most awaited film of Year

Anurag Kashyap is one of the best director of bollywood and Ranbir Kapoor is no doubt the best actor of our generation. These two facts are more than enough to get excited about the next venture of both stars – Bombay Velvet. The film is making buzz in media since Ranbir’s last solo film Besharam (2013). Ranbir had huge expectations from Besharam which was directed by Abhinav Kashyap, brother of Anurag Kashyap. Ranbir got so upset about the performance of Besharam at box office that he decided to take a break.

However, fans are desperately waiting for Ranbir’s next film. Luckily 2015 will see four movies of Ranbir Kapoor released at box office. Bombay Velvet will be released in May 2015 and reports have it that Ranbir has done a lot of hard work for his role of Johnny Balraj in Bombay Velvet.

The film is set in the city of Bombay during the 1940s decade. According to Plot summary Johnny Balraj (Ranbir) is a boxer/street fighter who goes against all odds to win his destiny. Actress Anushka sharma plays the role of jazz singer Rosie with whom Johnny Balraj forms a romantic relationship.

Anurag Kashyap has said that Bombay Velvet is inspired from James Ellroy’s LA Quartet (four separate novels that are set in Los Angeles City). James Ellroy is very popular crime fiction author and one of his LA Quartet novel LA Confidential is already made into a critically acclaimed film.

From the look of the film, it seems that Anurag Kashyap is somewhat inspired from Al Pacino’s Tony Montana’s adaption in 1981 film Scarface. Brian De Palma’s Scarface was a very violent but critically acclaimed masterpiece of 1980s. In a scene, Al Pacino take out his gun and open fire while quoting famous dialogue “Say Hello to My Little Friend”. Anurag Kashyap has gone in a similar approach and we can see in poster that Ranbir kapoor is firing two guns while the poster quotes “Hello I am Johnny Balraj Nice to Meet You”.

Even if Anurag Kashyap models Ranbir Kapoor’s Johnny Balraj after Tony Montana it wont matter. This is because Anurag knows very well to add flavor to his characters. His film Gangs of Wasseypur was inspired from ‘The Godfather’ film series but he worked with such a perfection that it is now regarded as one of the best movies of Bollywood. Anurag has directed critically acclaimed movies like Black Friday, That Girl in Yellow boots and the recently released Ugly. We hope that this films turn out to be one of the finest films of Indian cinema.
