Top 70 Best Spy Movies of All Time

What are the best Spy movies? The word spy often brings thrill to the fans of action mystery films. After all detective movies are the best source where they can get unlimited mind blowing action and suspense that keep them tied to the seat till the last scene of the film. The word ‘Espionage’ films is used to describe as a sub genre of action and thriller films where the protagonist is a secret agent employed to his home country’s secret intelligence agency. Usually antagonist of such films is either a powerful and most wanted terrorist or secret agent of enemy country whose mission is collect top-secret information.

Spy films were first introduced to the cinema during the 1930s. It was German director Fritz Lang who made this sub-genre popular among audience after he gave back to back hit films as Spies (1928) and Hangmen Also Die. If Fritz Lang films initiated the detective movies sub genre then it was Alfred Hitchcock’s critically acclaimed mystery spy movies that made this sub-genre as most appealing and entertaining.

However the cinema was yet to find the most popular detective and it found the hero in Ian Fleming’s James Bond. The character was already a hit after Ian Fleming’s novel on him became best seller. But it was British actor Sean connery who popularly brought the character to life on big screen. Soon James Bond became a common name and is often cited as the most famous spy of the fictional world. The popularity of James Bond is still on its peak even after 6 decades. In fact the revival of James Bond by Daniel Craig has made the character more popular than ever. I would also like to mention another popular spy of 19th Century – Sherlock Holmes. The character was created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and is also a fan favorite.

Here we have compiled a list of greatest detective films ever made. As spy movies were popularized by James Bond, so you are surely going to find a lot of James Bond movies in the list. So check out the list of top spy movies:
