Spanish cinema has seen the worst days back during the second world war and has evolved from that to become one of the most popular film industry in the world. It was not easy for Spanish directors and producers to fund the movies so local film production companies of Spain joined film studios of adjoining countries (Italy, Germany and France) to produce movies in the 1960s and 1970s. After the end of dictatorship, Spanish cinema became more open in terms of freedom of expression and art. Directors became more independent and were more open to experiment in film making. This led to first academy award for the country in 1982. By 1990s Spanish movies and spanish actors became popular world wide. Some of the most popular actors and directors from Spanish cinema are – Guillermo del Toro, Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. Spain is mainly known for its fantasy movies. However many Spanish movies of Horror, Comedy and Romance genre has also attracted critics and fans world wide.
