Top 65 Best Heist Movies Of All Time

What are the best heist movies? Heist is probably the most loved sub-genre of crime films. If the plot is justified and acceptable then there is no doubt that heist films or caper movies become instant favorite of audience. The heist sub-genre was introduced back in the 1930s but it didn’t found much popularity until the 1960s decade. In the 1960s two films – Ocean’s Eleven and The Italian Job increased the interest of fans and critics as well in the heist genre.

Even though caper movies are one of the most loved movie sub-genres yet there are not many heist films produced. This is because heist movies requires a lot of focus on plot. Unlike drama, romance or comedy, Heist films can not be one directional. In fact heist movies are full of plot twists and often keeps the audience tied to the seat till the end of the movie. Many heist movies have bank robbery as main theme. But there are several robbery films that focus on stealing of other important objects like top secret documents or secret weapons. Although most of the time movies are inspired from real life events but often we hear news of a bank robbery executed in a filmy style. People often get ideas from heist movies and that is why director often leave a loophole in the main plot of a heist film.

Basically all heist movies have a common plot. The plot of such robbery films can be divided in to three broad categories – the development of plan, the execution of plan and the after events of robbery. A heist film can also focus on any one particular category mentioned above. Like Reservoir dogs only focused on the after events of a robbery gone wrong.

Generally heist films are full of daredevil stunts and actions but there are few good examples of caper movies (heist comedy movies) as well. Here we have compiled a list of greatest heist movies of all time. Not all the films listed here have bank robbery as main theme. We have also included classic films where robbery is just a sub-plot of the main film. Check out the list of greatest heist films ever made:
