Top 100 Best Gangster Movies

What are the best gangster movies? There is a famous inside quote in Hollywood that if you want to win Academy Award (or any Other major award) then you should portray a real life gangster or criminal on Screen. If you take a look on the “Best Actor” or “Best Supporting Actor” award list of Oscars you will find that most of the award are bagged for portraying a real life gangster in crime genre. Interestingly Crime movies not only become cult and critics favorite but also do good business at box office. Many critics quote that the real depth and versatility of a actor is seen in crime movies where he/she have to portray a wide range of emotions and sometimes in a single scene. Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert DiNero, Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day Lewis and Sean Penn who are widely regarded as the Best Hollywood Actors of All time, have portrayed real life gangster on screen.

As a fan i must admit that i have always admired crime movies as far back as i remember. Who doesn’t like the tensed drama and the over controversial life portrayals of gangsters on screen. The history of crime genre dates back to the 1920s when the talkies were at dawn. The very first and most popular crime film is said to be the 1931 film The Public Enemy where James Cagney portrayed gangster Tom Powers. After that there was a flood of movies in the crime genre. Lot of actors gained a huge fan base for their criminal movies.

One thing that was common in almost every gangster/crime film was to show heavy and rich lifestyle of a mafia where not only he has a treasure of money but also was feared of in the society and had deep connections in the SYSTEM. May be the reason that even villains were portrayed as heroes in crime films, was what attracted many actors to try hands in this genre.

Here i have compiled a list of 100 greatest Crime films of all time. Please note that i have tried to include not only just gangster movies but also various sub genres of crime such as crime thriller, crime comedy, crime action, crime mob, crime heist, and crime drama. So you will find a wide range of best crime movies in the list.
