‘Ben-Hur’ Remake Began Filming in Italy

The Remake of Ben-Hur finally begins

It was almost a year ago when Kazakh director Timur Bekmambetov was announced as the new director of MGM and Paramount’s remake of Ben-Hur. After that there was no news about the progress on remake. It did created buzz when actors like Tom Hiddleston and Gal gadot were approached to play pivotal roles in the film. However after a year long hiatus the remake has final come out of the script mode to the production mode. MGM and Paramount Pictures has released a joint press-release statting that the principal photography of ‘Ben-Hur’ remake has begun in Italy. Along with this the studios also disclosed about the cast and crew of the film.

It was surprising to see that the studios has gone for a all fresh cast for the film. Except Morgan Freeman all other actors in ‘Ben-hur’ are relatively new with no to little experience in the film industry. The titular role of Judah Ben-hur will be played by Jack Huston. Jack played the role of Richard Harrow in the popular TV series Broadwalk empire. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes fame Toby Kebbell will play the role of main antagonist Messala. Other actors include Morgan Freeman as Ilderim, Rodrigo Santoro as Jesus Christ and Nazanin Boniadi as Esther.


Going with a all new face approach and that too on the remake of a classic is a risky move but director Timur Bekmambetov has already stated that his film will be more based on the original Lew Wallace novel ‘Ben-Hur:A Tale of the Christ (on which the 1959 film was made). Timur Bekmambetov has gained a pretty good fan following amoung youngsters after making action films like Wanted and Abraham Lincoln:The Vampire Hunter. Timur has stated that the all fresh face approach will help to keep the freshness of the film. As the original film was released for almost 5 decades ago, So the remake might be able to make a connection with Today’s generation who might not have seen the original film.

The original Ben-hur starred Charlton Heston in lead role ans was directed by William Wyler. The film was one of the most expensive film of its time and won record 11 academy awards including Best Picture, Best actor and Best director. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest film ever made in the world cinema.
